When we awoke, we were excited to find that our tents are dry. After packing up, we began rolling south, towards the Gulf of Mexico. After about 10 miles, we stop at a gas station for some breakfast.
Back on the road, we make it to the coast and turn to the west. Once again, the winds are behind us. This weather can't possibly be better. We pass by a bicycle shop and stop in for some shot blocks and to air up our tires.
After another very short stretch of riding (and a quick stop at Cabela's), we stop for lunch in McDonalds so we can check the internet again.
In the afternoon, we finally make some progress, and are able to cruise all the way through Destin, FL. The beaches here are beautiful. Shortly thereafter, Jake gets his first flat tire of the trip. No big deal, we change it out and get back on the road.
In general the roads have been excellent. However, we encountered a few pretty sketchy sections today. Most notably, a bridge to the west of Destin which had lots of traffic and no shoulder.
We were scheduled to meet up with a warmshowers host tonight, and we heard that he was hosting another cyclist too. As we continued along the beach, we saw a rider up ahead. Perhaps this was the other guy we were to be meeting? We follow him into a gas station, and end up meeting ________, an Apache who has been riding for 5 months. He left the reservation near Sedona, AZ and rode to Key West and is now on his way home. At this stop Jake gets another flat. Funny how flats tend to come in bunches. Anyways, we chatted with the Apache for a while, found out he wasn't the other warmshowers guy, then rode with him for a while, and then got ahead of him.
After a stop at Walmart, we head over to our Warmshowers host. We meet Joe (host), Jorg (a cyclist from Canada), and _______ (a cyclist from Houston). Jorg had organized a pizza party and had purchased a bunch of beer. We like pizza, and we like beer, so it was bound to be a good night. Everyone stayed up chatting away, talking about crazy bike riding stories, and reliving all kinds of concert experiences.
There wasn't a lot of riding today, but it sure was a busy day. Either way, it was another great day on the road.
