Arrrgh! It was time for me to depart the Pirate Haus! The open seas (highways, for a cyclist) were calling my name. Captain Conrad once again provided as many pancakes as I could possibly eat. I'd highly recommend this hostel to any weary sailor (or traveler). It is also a fantastic place to bring a family. I think kids 4-12 will really enjoy it, and there is a lot to see in the town of St. Augustine. Pirate Haus Video.
In the afternoon, Jake arrived from Kansas City. He assembled his bike, and we finally got on the road around 4pm. We had a couchsurfing host set up for the evening, but it was about 50 miles away. We had to hustle to beat the sun.
Of course, it is a requirement to dip the bicycles into the ocean before beginning the journey. It makes the trip official. It also assures that we literally ride from coast to coast.
After the quick photo opportunity, we jumped back on the bikes, and pedaled like the wind. Actually, with the wind. Once again, we had favorable winds, and were able to make great time. We arrived in Interlachen with about 20 minutes of light left in the day. Our host picked us up, drove us through the neighborhoods to their house, made us fantastic sandwiches, and gave us a cushy place to sleep. Huge thanks!
The plan for Saturday is about 75 miles to a campground right next to a state park. We can only hope the wind continues to help us out!
Day 24 - 55.26 Miles (Edit: garmin link added 4/23)

ReplyDeleteToday I sat and read the blog "cover to cover" and I must say it makes for a fantastic read! I am so happy that you two are out there adventuring and all by leg power! A few comments after my reading:
1) Sorry I did not swing Ultra, I feel like I should have made a better effort, but for the probable price of getting to the festival I now own the Giant so maybe I can ride for a bit with you when you get to Cali? San Diego to Tahoe anyone???
2) I find it ironic (yet understandable) that you are doing a coast to coast tour with a negligible carbon footprint but you love to eat MacDonalds! =) I suppose you can use the 1400 calories a meal and can't beat the free interweb.
Reading about your journey brings back memories of my travels and makes me feel a little envious. Enjoy every moment my friends (even the seemingly unenjoyable ones) and when you inevitably get tired, lonely or just sick of it all, remember that the alternative of work, for you, right now, is really no alternative at all. Cheers!
I have to admit these blogs are pretty exciting to read. It is fun to almost live vicariously through you on them. They are always funny and oddly enough pretty informative. I find myself everyday looking for the previous day's post. I expect them to only become more sporadic and adventurous now that have not only a compadre but that this new partner in crime happens to be the world infamous Jake Ferris as well!! They should only get more interesting as well. Have fun and keep on Rollin!!!
