Sunday. May 9.
The day started cloudy, but within an hour the sun was back out.
We continued our climbing today, and were planning to end the day at the top of a mountain over 6000 feet above sea level. The mountains in west Texas are pretty beautiful. The traffic is almost non-existent, it's a shame so few people get to see this.
We stopped in the town of Alpine, had lunch, and continued on to Fort Davis. After Fort Davis, the real climbing began. Sixteen miles of riding and 1600 feet of climbing all the way up to the McDonald Observatory. This was our first 'mountain stage' of the tour.
The climbs in the Texas hill country were steep, but were over quickly. This one just kept on going. Luckily, just enough clouds appears to give us a small respite from the beating sun.
At the top, we met our host for the evening, John. He works and lives at the observatory. Seems like a pretty awesome job. We took a quick dip in the pool, and then John gave us a private tour of the observatory.
And yet another awesome sunset.
We chatted with John and his family for a while and then fell fast asleep. Huge thanks to John!
